New road safety measures announced for Newry

Sinn Féin Newry Councillor Charlie Casey has said that the announcement of two new crossing points at locations in Newry will make the city’s roads safer for pedestrians and motorists.
The new crossings will be situated on the Downshire Road at Church Avenue junction and on the Belfast Road at Windsor Avenue junction.
Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Casey said, “I am delighted with the news that this work which I have been calling for will now be carried out. Both of these crossings are located on one of the main arterial routes to the centre of town which carries a very high volume of traffic every day.
“I hope that the provision of these crossings will encourage motorists to slow down and will also give pedestrians a safe crossing point on what is a very busy road.
“Any measures which enhance road safety are to be welcomed, particularly in light of the number of road accidents and fatalities which we have seen across the North since the beginning of the year,” he added.
