Curran praises Derrybeg community memorial tribute to Kevin Heatly

Councillor Brendan Curran has praised the Derrybeg community for what he described as a ‘fitting memorial’ tribute in memory of young Kevin Heatly, a 12 year old child, murdered by a British soldier in the estate 40 years ago yesterday.
Speaking to Newry Times, Curran said, “The gathered crowd was addressed by community activist Malachy Rafferty who organised the event and local woman Kathleen McGee who at 15 years of age witnessed Kevin’s murder.
“The murder of this lad like so many, despite only being a child at the time, remains unresolved regardless of the fact that his soldier killer was well known at the time.”
Curran echoed the call from the local Sinn Féin Hughes Grant Watters, Cumann, for justice for the family in what he insisted was a ‘terrible killing’.
