Hyland slams MLA pay increase as 'an absolute disgrace'

Newry Independent Councillor Davy Hyland has described the prospect of an 11% increase to the annual wage of local MLAs as ‘an absolute disgrace’. Hyland was speaking after an independent panel decided last week that assembly members pay should rise by almost £5,000 from April 2013. The 11% increase to £48,000 will be financed by a cut in office costs.
Speaking to Newry Times, Hyland said, “I think it’s an absolute disgrace that they should be given an 11% pay rise. Many people are struggling on low pay and insufficient social security payments, yet the politicians in the ivory tower of Stormont are getting a £5,000 pay rise or over £400 per month.”

He added, “Given the inability of Stormont politicians to deal with rising unemployment and fuel poverty, there is absolutely so support for this latest initiative.”

  1. Sounds like a case of sour grapes because he is not getting it! – i wonder if he would say the same if he had not been kicked out of his old party?

  2. Didn`t see him having a specific jibe at his old party yet the above posters appear to have.
