Mayor Charlie Casey speaks about Bank of Ireland fire

The building is a Grade B1 listed building

Mayor for Newry & Mourne Charlie Casey has today reacted to last night’s fire at the Bank of Ireland’s Newry branch. Newry Times reported last night that a fire had broke out at the historic building on Trevor Hill.
Speaking to Newry Times about the fire, Mayor Charlie Casey said, “Firstly I must be thankful that nobody was injured in this substantial fire which a number of fire appliances attended. My second thoughts are for those who work in this building and the bank’s customers who will face major inconvenience until it is operational again.”
He continued, “In addition this is one of Newry’s oldest buildings and as such I am thankful at reports coming through that although damage to the internal structure is extensive the external facade has not been majorly impacted. I hope that this branch of the Bank of Ireland is up and running as soon as possible and that the reasons for the blaze can be discovered and dealt with as a matter of urgancy.”
