Ritchie lends support to WASPI campaigners

ritchie9SDLP candidate for South Down, Margaret Ritchie, has reiterated her support for the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign on the WASPI Day of Action.
WASPI campaigns on behalf of women born in the 1950s who were not properly informed of the acceleration in the equalisation of the state pension age.


 
 
Speaking to Newry Times, Ritchie said, “The WASPI campaigners are not opposed to the equalisation in the state pension age: what they are opposed to is the adverse impact that the failure to inform them of the acceleration has had on them.

Go For It March 2017“Women who expected to retire at 60 face five more years of work for which they did not plan or budget.
“Women already face state pension inequality as a result of the gender pay gap and the fact that they are more likely to work part-time and/or to have gaps in their employment due to caring responsibilities.


 
“Failure by the government to inform them of these changes exacerbates this inequality and has left thousands of women facing financial strain and enormous pressure,” she insisted.
“The SDLP has vocally and consistently supported these women and will continue to fight for fair transitional arrangements for them.
