'UK must look to Japan for lead on nuclear power' – Ritchie

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said that the UK would do well to look to Japan to see that a nuclear-free future is not only possible, it is advisable. Ms Ritchie, who leads on energy issues for the SDLP at Westminster, was speaking after Japan started work on shutting down their last nuclear reactor just over a year after the meltdown at Fukushima.
Speaking to Newry Times, she said, “Japan secured 30% of its power from the nuclear sector, but it feels confident that they can meet their energy needs without it, even though it has been an integral part of their grid for over 40 years. The UK, which only takes about 26% of its power from nuclear sources, can easily implement the same plan for itself without first having had to live through the literal and figurative fallout of a major disaster.”
Ritchie added, “I hope there will be a safe and sustainable approach to energy and I will continue to work hard in Westminster to ensure a nuclear-free future for the UK for the first time since 1956.”
